Safran Actuation GBU, Bandung Operations wins at Manufacturing Asia Awards 2025

Two key initiatives highlight the site’s commitment to carbon reduction and operational efficiency in aerospace manufacturing.

Safran Actuation GBU, Bandung Operations won Indonesia Sustainability Initiative of the Year - Aerospace and Defense and Indonesia Manufacturing Innovation of the Year - Aerospace and Defense in the Manufacturing Asia Awards 2025.

The awards recognise the site’s dual focus on environmental responsibility and operational excellence. In 2024 and 2025, the site implemented five key sustainability initiatives aimed at achieving its goal of becoming a carbon-neutral company by 2050. These initiatives included process optimisation, renewable energy adoption, employee commuting programmes, environmental awareness campaigns, and community engagement through tree planting.

By integrating these measures, Safran Actuation GBU, Bandung Operations achieved a 51% reduction in direct carbon emissions in 2024 and projects a 75% reduction in 2025 compared to its 2019 baseline, exceeding its 2025 and 2028 targets.

Indirect carbon emissions also decreased, with 13.8 tons CO₂e reduced through employee commuting initiatives and 60-102 tons CO₂e captured annually via community tree-planting projects. The site maintained full compliance with environmental standards, strengthening its global reputation for sustainable manufacturing.

Alongside its sustainability achievements, the site advanced operational performance through a focused process innovation programme targeting the Mercury product family. Six Kaizen initiatives addressed high production costs and quality challenges. Improvements included optimising grinding methods, automating deburring, implementing alternative measurement devices, developing in-house Nital Etch Inspection capabilities, refining machining accuracy, and introducing gear skiving technology.

These measures delivered measurable results: defect rates for burns, damage, and scratches dropped from 5,554 PPM to zero, production lead time improved from 91 days to 23 days, and two machines were freed for new projects. Additionally, the Mercury product cost competitiveness improved from 40% above competitor pricing to 20% lower, reinforcing customer trust and supporting site growth towards its 1 million production hours goal in 2028.
