Lee Kum Kee wins Manufacturing Asia Awards for biogas power generation project
The company is transforming waste into energy to achieve sustainable development.
Global sauce and food brand Lee Kum Kee bagged the China Sustainable Manufacturing Initiative of the Year - Food category win at the recently held Manufacturing Asia Awards for the success of its “IC Tower and Biogas Power Generation” project at its Xinhui Production Base.
The project improves the efficiency of wastewater treatment and collects the biogas produced by the process to generate electricity, transforming waste into energy and creating sustainable economic benefits. In the field of wastewater treatment, the adoption of a new generation of efficient IC reactors has been instrumental in enhancing wastewater treatment capacity and efficiency. Meanwhile, the project made dedicated efforts to explore the recyclable utilisation of resources. In contrast to the industry norm of directly emitting biogas generated during wastewater treatment, Lee Kum Kee collects and processes biogas for electricity generation.
Since the project commenced in 2022, more than two million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity have been generated, equivalent to saving 585 tonnes of coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by over 1,000 tonnes. With this initiative, Lee Kum Kee is the first enterprise in Jiangmen City to generate electricity with biogas and is a showcase for the technology’s wider application in the industry.
Lee Kum Kee’s largest production facility, the Xinhui Production Base is located in Jiangmen City, Guangdong Province of China, and has introduced a series of installations to conserve energy and reduce emissions, including solar photovoltaic power systems, geothermal heat pump systems and a man-made wetland park to further purify treated wastewater. The Xinhui Production Base has been recognised as a “National Green Factory" and has earned Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification, the highest possible level for sustainability performance.
