Igus integrates plastic tech in corrosion-free bikes

The firm uses recycled and PFAs-free materials to boost sustainability.

German manufacturer Igus is pushing sustainable innovation in the bike industry with a corrosion-free bicycle made entirely from high-performance plastic components.

“So the core business of Igus is essentially bearings, so made from high performance plastics, they don't need to be lubricated,” said Philip Pauli, International Sales Manager. “They're lightweight and corrosion free, because they're made from plastic.”

The bike incorporates Igus’ lubrication-free bearings, gears, and other moving parts. It also uses recycled high-density polyethylene (HDPE), sourced partly from discarded fishing nets.

Pauli said during the Taipei Cycle 2025 that a major challenge ahead is the global crackdown on PFAs—harmful chemicals used in many everyday products. “We face this challenge by providing our customers with a safe alternative, either PTFE free materials or PFAs free materials, or both.”

With 35 subsidiaries worldwide, Igus sees further expansion in Asia to improve delivery times and drive innovation.
